Indonesia – The Land of Fire Breathing Mountains and Ancient Dragons

Indonesia was truly a wild, life affirming adventure and a must visit destination.

This was my first visit to Indonesia and I chose to do it solo. While most of my friends and family were a little apprehensive at the idea of a single young female such as myself traveling the lands of fire breathing mountains and dragons, these feelings were mostly unbeknownst to me, instead replaced with sheer excitement and jubilation.

However in saying that, I did a fair amount of research on my choice destinations (my first words of advice) and tried to plan ahead (this in hindsight can be both good and bad) which alleviated any fears of the unknown and with traveling solo. (My tips on this are covered in another post).

Of course as with any travel, during my trip there were many ups and downs: fleeting moments of self doubt and loneliness, aversive situations and many sleepless nights.

Alas, that is the beauty of the business and these moments are integral for polarising the small surprises and happinesses along the way. Just breathe, be grateful, and take comfort in the fact that everything will be okay.

Above all, with me now resides wonderful vivid memories, a touch of nostalgia for a beautiful country, culture and its people, some new friends, rejuvenated appreciation for the loved ones back home, and a sense of humbled accomplishment.

One of the little happinesses. A group of happy local kids photo bombing at a Lake Toba lookout. Their lively energy and general cuteness was the perfect way to end a fruitful day and still warms my heart.
